I was supposed to have my wisdom teeth taken out 2 weeks ago, but I had a horrible cold and sore throat so I cancelled. I rescheduled for the first, tomorrow, but then last week the receptionist called and said the oral surgeon decided to go out of the country on vacation and she had to cancel all his appointments. :dizzy: And that he would be gone for 3 weeks. :dizzy: So the next day they can get me in is August 25th, which is a Thursday.

Here's the dilemma - That week, we have PD Tuesday and Wednesday. We won't have any time in our classrooms. (We get one day the week before, although I could work more than that, plus Monday if I wanted/needed). The kids come back the next Monday. So if I get my teeth out, I will have Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun to recoop. My concern is, I don't just want to feel ok on Monday - I want to be playing my A GAME on the first day of school. Also, what if I have more work to do over the weekend or Thurs/Fri to get ready for school?

What would you do? Under normal circumstances should I be wearing my game face on Monday? Able to give the beginning of the year spiel 7 times? (I am having all 4, none impacted, but I will be totally out.) If I don't do it that day, I will have to schedule during the school year and probably use sick days.

Yikes. My brother had all four out at the same time, and he was dead to the world for three full days.

I know people react differently, though.

I'm having two teeth pulled tomorrow. I'll let you know my recoup time (and, ahem, if I *actually* make it through).

Could you possibly wait until your next school break? Are they hurting you and getting them out now is an absolute necessity? I know that totally sucks to wait, but that's actually what I'm planning on doing with mine, although I only have one that needs to be removed. I just hate to see you stressing and worrying about the first day of school, even if you would probably be okay.

Everyone is so different when it comes to wisdom teeth. I asked a ton of questions when I had mine done, and I got every response from it was a piece of cake to it was a nightmare. Personally, my procedure was easy. I wasn't all the way out, but it didn't hurt at all and after a day (mine was done at 9am, so I mean the rest of that day) of rest, I was fine. Is there any way you can find another surgeon? Or a regular dentist? That's who did mine.

The office I go to does everything - orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, root canals, etc etc. They have all the specialists under one roof. So I would prefer not to go elsewhere since they have it all together.

I had my wisdom teeth removed in 9th grade. Two were impacted. I was out of it for about two days (one being the day I had them removed as I was the first apt. so my mom could get to work). The only thing I wasn't able to do for a few days afterwards was sing in my chorus class so I didn't rip my stitches out by opening my mouth too wide.

I did not have any trouble with mine and neither did my oldest daughter but my younger daughter was a different story. Hers was more extensive than mine. The regular dentist took out mine and my older daughter's but my younger daughter had to go to an oral surgeon and she was actually put to sleep instead of a regular shot. Everybody is different. My husband's grandfather died the day that I got my wisdom teeth out and I went to the wake the next day and the funeral. I was a little swollen but not much more. My older daughter did hers last year the week before she began student teaching and she was fine. My younger daughter was in bed for a week and my husband had to take 3 extra vacation days to stay with her because even though she was 18 years old, somebody had to be with her round the clock for a week.

I didn't have mine out in July like I was supposed to, so I'm just waiting until next summer. I don't want to have to use an indefinite number of personal days for it. Are they really bothering you or can you wait? Mine hardly ever hurt, I just keep getting "recommended" that they be taken out.

I would either go to another surgeon or put it off for another school break if they are not bothering you.

When I had all four of mine out, I needed about 4 days to feel better and wasn't completely back to normal for a couple of weeks. I really swelled up! You also will not feel like yourself because of pain killers and not being able to eat normal food. I would plan to have them out when you can give yourself time to heal.

I feel bad for you! It's just too bad that you had to get sick the other time!

I would go ahead and get it done now. If you don't get them done now, you might not be able to wait until the next school break before they start hurting and you end up needing to go have them pulled anyway in an emergency.

I had mine taken out in the morning one day and I was pretty okay by the next morning, totally back to normal by the second day. I had some soreness, but honestly the thing I remember most is that the gauze packed into where the teeth had been and in my cheeks tasted funny/bad. I had a lot of soup, pudding, and 7Up that week. It wasn't the most terrible experience of my life.

A 4-day wknd would have been more than enough time for me to recuperate. I only had 2 wisdom teeth removed, but everything went smoothly, didn't even need the pain med they prescribed, & no pain/discomfort at all.

My experience was just like Ms. I's. I didn't have any problem other than I was really groggy the first day. They put me completely under for the surgery, and the next thing I knew, I was on the couch at home watching tv. LOL. I was fine the next day.

Do you have any 3 day weekends in Sept or October? Say you had a Monday off. You could have it done on Friday after school and be good to go by Tuesday. I don't see your recovery taking longer than that as you said they were not impacted.

All four of mine were impacted and taken out at the same time. I was feeling okay by the next day, but I was swollen/puffy for about a week! I looked like a chipmunk but felt fine.

Guess I'm the odd woman out! I had all four removed (none impacted, but getting close), and I had it pretty rough - then again, I have absolutely no pain tolerance. The nurses told my mom that I reacted to the medication they gave me worse than any patient they had ever treated. I was completely useless for four days - completely swollen, groggy, and in pain (I was on the strongest medication possible and it still didn't mask all the pain!). I only planned on missing one day of work, but missed three. I went back to work on Day 5 still partially groggy with one side of my face still swollen. You never know how you'll react.

Hope I didn't scare you! I think I'm the odd person out! :sorry:

I had mine taken out and was totally fine three - four hours later and by two days later eating normal foods.

I have a pretty high pain tolerance and am pretty ansy and don't do well with sitting around when I am supposed to.

Oh. Thank you for sharing your non-horror stories. I, too, meant to get my wisdom teeth out, but ran into a timing snag.

I was determined to have them removed this summer. because of complete and udder fear I have put off the removal for FIFTEEN YEARS! (I know, I know). Two of my complete anxiety-inducing situations--not eating and lack of control (drugged) are rolled up into one not inticing package. I plan to set the appointment for either Thanksgiving, Christmas or Spring Break because I dont want to risk losing work days.

And why do people insist on telling you their wisdom teeth horror stories when you mention you have a phobia about it? You ladies are awesome for sharing nice stories. :)

I had the same phobia but I was actually looking forward to the wisdom teeth. Figured it would be a breeze compared to the root canal and crowns I had to endure - at least for this I would be knocked out. I tried scheduling at the beginning of the summer and all the dates they had available were conflicting with plans I already had, so mid0July was the earliest, but then I was sick. I was glad they could reschedule me quickly, and then the dentist decides to go on vacation. ugggg.

I need to get mine removed >_>

I have two impacted two partially erupted.

I was supposed to get mine removed LAST summer, but my heart doctor didn't send a list of approved anesthetics to my oral surgeon until like a day or two before the surgery was scheduled. Got to the oral surgeon, waited for an hour (because they changed the scheduled time without telling us and moved the appointment an hour ahead), and then the oral surgeon said "What are you doing here?" and explained that he did not feel comfortable performing the surgery due to my cardiac electrophysiologist's note explaining my heart condition.

so now I need to find an oral surgeon who practices at the same hospital as my cardiac electrophysiologist so I can get the wisdom teeth out.
