I have completed a credential program and student teaching in California. However, I cannot pass the RICA and now I am moving to Tennessee so I've decided that I will just take the Praxis and get my credential there instead. However, I cannot figure out which exam number I need to take. https://www.ets.org/praxis/tn/requirements/

I originally thought I needed to take 5751 (made up of three exams) but it says for "Admission to an educator preparation program." Or there is 5017 and 5018 or 5001 to be certified in Elementary Education. I want to make sure I take the right test as well as study for the right test. Thank you!

Normally the source authority for what one needs is always the state department of education. I searched "tennessee teacher license out of state tests" and found https://www.tn.gov/education/licensing/educator-licensure/out-of-state-educators.html - which, somewhat unusually, just links straight to the Praxis page at https://www.ets.org/praxis/tn/requirements/. What this page says is that there's an accepted test of elementary education pedagogy (Praxis 5017), an accepted test of reading instruction methodology (Praxis 5203), and a choice in elementary-education subject matter depending on when you take the test (5018 if the score is reported by August 31, 2019, OR the four-subtest 5001 bundle for scores reported after August 31). 5018 reports one single score, if memory serves, which means that a higher score in one of the four core content areas (language arts, math, science, social studies) might compensate for a lower one in an area of weakness.

    Let me be briefer:

    1. You'll take 5017 and 5203 regardless.
2a. You can choose to go with the 5001 bundle at any time.
2b. If you're sure you can post passing results for all the tests and apply by Aug. 31, you have the option of going with 5018 instead.

Take a look at the Study Companions for each of 5018 and 5001 to see which option will suit your testing style better.
