Did you have the ability to cancel the assignment or was it already past the time window? Also, were you able to talk with that school office about the hardship they caused with their apparent bait and switch?
Ever thought about finding a different job that would be worth your while?
There's a very simple explanation for that: they had to change the absence from a full day to a half day. Since you were already assigned the full day, they put you back in that assignment. This way you have at least something. If you were past the cancellation window, you could call them and let them know, and they should accept it, but if it's so late, might as well work it, because often (in some districts) it's hard to get something last minute. Half day is better than nothing.
Why didn't you just cancel the job once you discovered that it was a half-day?
