I currently teach 7th grade ELA/SS. I am certified to teach High School, and am strongly contemplating on transferring in-district next year to the high school. I really just want to teach social studies exclusively, but am apprehensive because I feel like I got to "relearn the ropes." I feel so strongly anchored right now, respected--beginning anew is a bit discouraging. A good point is I have taught these kids in high school while they were in Middle School, so I already have a good idea of who I will be teaching (at least those in 9th grade).

So, has anyone taught at both levels? Which level did you prefer and why? What are key differences between teaching high school and middle school?

I went from 7th ELA/SS to teaching soph and senior English, and a couple years later went to seniors exclusively. For me, it's been far more rewarding because they've read more literature and can participate in intelligent discussions (well, most of them.) It's fun being a part of a pivotal moment in their lives as they head off to college. I've never looked back!

The downsides are that by the time I get them, many students have poor writing habits, my classes are large, and senioritis is real. And the cell phones...my gosh, they are positively addicted!

I actually enjoy 8th grade but high school would be a better use of my certificate, so I am also thinking about moving up. I believe the chalIenge of working with older kids in bigger schools would allow me to reach my real potential in education. I'm also fairly new to the profession so reprogramming myself shouldn't be as difficult. We'll see how these job fairs go. I may just as easily end up at my current school or another MS. Who knows? It's actually kinda fun exploring these opportunities when you already have a job lol.

I think that you should get a couple of years at the middle school level under your belt before you move up to high school. Didn't you do elementary last year or the year before, or am I thinking of someone else?

I currently teach both levels, but I my experience and preference are at the high school level. I feel like I relate to the kids better. With that said, I wouldn't leave a position where I felt relatively stable and respected, at least not until I had gained a little more experience there.

    Caesar,

I only taught elementary for a year, and I detested it. Before that I taught 6-8th for a year, and have been teaching 7th grade for the past THREE years. So in total, I have FOUR years experience in the middle grades, and one at elementary. I LOVE middle grades. I am hesitant about high school, but I do want to branch out and teach exclusively social studies. The principal at the high school has said he has heard wonderful things about me and if a spot comes open, I'm his first choice--so I'm confident I will be offered to transfer. I'm just not so sure I want to---but then again it has its advantages. My classes average 30 each, the high school averages around 15 kids in each. I would get to teach what I want to teach all day, rather than teach something I don't want to teach the bulk of the day (as I do now).

    It's a tough call.

EDITED AND PUT IN CAPS, I CAN'T BELIEVE I DIDN'T INCLUDE MY CURRENT YEAR IN THE COUNT :(
