After many posts and responses, I believe I am heading towards non-renewal. I'm trying not to let it get to me... trying not to give up but it's slowly eating away my confidence...... I'm not even gonna entertain that "deal." Feels like a clean break's gonna happen..., the school goes one way and I go the other....

Last Friday, I cleaned my room a bit and packed up my folding table and took it home. I brought it back today because I didn't want to make such an obvious room change. I've been hounding my co-workers to write me LORs. I already have my Ps. I hope I can find a new job before the year is up. As of now, it feels I'm just biding my time until I get that pink-slip and that's it. The P asked today about a position that I told him about. I said I applied but didn't hear back. That's my life..,. Survive the last 6 weeks and start over again.

Good luck with the job hunt. It seems like you didn't really want to leave this school. I'm sorry you're being asked to.

Some days, I wanted to return for a 2nd year of HS experience. Maybe even get that first physics class to teach so I could practice before moving on. Then I'd have 2 years of HS math plus 1 year Physics. Then other days, I can't stand those mouthy lower level math students (think Algebra IB 10th grade). The low achieving 9th grade class would become next year's Alg. IB. And I can't stand these kids either! I tried convincing myself staying would be good for my future. Then, because of those riff-raff students, I'd rather leave and find something else. I'd been feeling those two opposite feelings for months. But seeing now that the end is near, I'm not going into the last weeks knowing that's not an option anymore.

So you're pretty sure at this point you'll be non-renewed and not laid off due to RIF? If that's the case, you should also consider filing for unemployment while you look, since you have documentation in your favor if they try to fight you on it.

At this point I don't think you need to worry about anyone being concerned about you taking your personal items home. It's none of their business. Besides that, lots of teachers take home personal items over the summer--sometimes it's school policy to do so, and other times teachers just want to make sure that their stuff doesn't get damaged or stolen over the break.

I am pretty sure of the following scenarios from most to least likely. Just guesses and general feeling combined with expert opinions.

    Non-renewal - 90%
    RIF - 9%
    Re-hire - 1%

With unemployment, I can wait until late July because I continue getting paychecks and unemployment until August 31st.

Taking my printer home and saying it's broken is one thing. Removing a folding table might draw unnecessary questions so I brought it back! Other stuff I'll likely pile into a crate and take it home on Friday. I've got 6 more of those! ;)

I would start the underemployment process as soon as possible.

I am so sorry this happened to you. Physics teachers are difficult to come by - even in states that don't have teacher shortages. A lot of schools would jump at the chance to have you teach both Physics and Math! I don't understand the reasoning behind this or why they are keeping you in limbo, even though I've read your previous posts. It's not clear if the principal is making this a personal thing or not.
If you don't mind me asking, in which state do you teach?

Here, you can't actually get unemployment benefits until you draw your last pay check. You are assured 3 months of benefits, which may be stretched out to 6 months with a renewal and as long as you continue following procedures and looking for jobs.

That's why I'm taking the advice of everyone here. I just got my updated teaching certificate in the mail! I guess I can submit it to the central office. Then the P may recommend non-renewal to the super? Even if a P does not tell me why I, as a non-tenured, can get non-renewed, does he have to give the super a reason?

I'm guessing that the P may tell the Super, in private, the reason for the non-renewal. In public, it will be the standard letter.

Try not to feel discouraged. I was crushed after having a similar experience last year (my 1st year). But I found the right school for me and I got the support I needed and it's just an incredible difference. I really hope you find that soon.

Even as early as 3 days into the school year, I kept saying that I would be here for only 1 year. That I would gain experience and it would help out for my next job search. I'm approaching this from the mindset of having the benefit of the "early warning." I've already edited my resume and online application to include my current job and new certifications. I have my Ps LOR and am about to land at least one more. That teacher wants to print it on school letterhead before handing it to me. I'll be hounding my other source for the 3rd one. I'm considering asking another teacher just to mention something about my helping him during baseball season. Dunno if that would help but I do LOVE baseball and would like to break into coaching baseball one day.

So, the more thinking I've done, I believe I'll be OK. I'll have to be patient just as I had to be last summer. This time, it feels natural to look and not because I was forced out on the last day of school.

Do you have access to a scanner? Make sure you have all these documents as PDFs. So many applications these are online only.

Genius Scan for your phone. Much better than a scanner. =)

I wouldn't have thought that had my job been 25 miles away from home instead of 65. My new car is less than a year old and it reads 24,000 miles!

I think the issue is sharing that info with others. It gives others the impression that you're not in it for the long haul, which leads to situations like the one you're in now. Your admin may think that they understand your motivations and will use those to justify letting you go. Don't give people the tools they need to use to get rid of you. Make them work for it.
