I recall when I first saw a SmartBoard. I was in college, substitute teaching, and they brought in a SmartBoard to install. I didn't really think anything of it. I knew vaguely what they were, and they sounded nice enough.

I now have one in my room. My school sings the praises of the SmartBoard. It is the new wave in teaching children at a higher consciousness or something.

I'm sorry to speak controversely, but I don't get it. Sure, the SmartBoard makes some neat use of technology, particularly if one is clever and thoughtful in the use, but I'm failing to see how this is significantly greater than... anything.

Where do you stand on SmartBoards?

There are several smart boards in my school, but I've only seen one teacher ever use it. I'm not sure how to use them. Most teachers I know just use them as a projector. 1:1 chromebooks are the current technology rage now at my school.

I had the first SmartBoard in our building, and that was probably 12 years ago. Now all of our classrooms have them. I love mine, and I use it all day, every day. It’s basically a huge touch screen monitor. I use it to control my computer, play videos, and show presentations. It’s also an electronic whiteboard, and I can save or print notes from it. As far as I know, everyone on my team uses their boards every day.

I use it and I like to have it but I'll admit it probably doesn't get its money's worth in my classroom. Most of the time, I use the pointer to "click" items on the screen, but I could just as easily do that on my computer monitor.

There are many neat activities that can be done but I find them rather clunky to use. The SmartBoard is not as responsive as it could/should be. Now, if you could give me a screen that honestly functioned like a touch screen phone or iPad, that I could get behind.

I was surprised that so many were talking about these in the other thread, because we've been told for years by our tech people that they're extremely outdated and becoming obsolete, to the point where it was too hard to fix ones that were broken because the parts weren't being made anymore. We're in a new building this year and we have Apple TVs instead.

The picture is crystal clear and it's about 1,000 times better for projecting things. You can mirror from any device in the room and obviously play videos and stuff like that too, whereas with smartboard you could only use their software. However, it is not interactive- you can't write on the screen or anything like that. Now that we have these, there is pressure to create google slides presentations for each and every lesson. I teach 9 different groups a day and it becomes a huge burden. Some days I'd rather go back to just having a white board!

We haven't had Smartboards in our schools for years for this reason. Too expensive for what is, basically, old technology.

I don’t understand the part about only using their software.

I have a SmartBoard but I hate it. Sometimes the markers don't work if I have a PowerPoint on presentation mode. I have to calibrate my board at least once every few days. I would rather have a whiteboard + a projector.
