Wow czacza you've got serious credentials. I definitely can't match to that.

    Anyway update time!

I ended up going for a B+W laser printer. I managed to get one second hand off ebay for cheap. Pricey, but I consider it a small investment (especially if I hit my goal).

    Ok here's what I did.

I walked by my local shop (a co-op) and passed a noticeboard. Idea sprung into my head to whip up a quick A4 page on MS Word. It actually took quite a bit longer than i expected. Realised I didn't know what to write, and the fact that I wanted it to be perfect.

Multiple edits later (and a few coffees) I decided I was happy with it. I printed it and asked the guy at the shop if I could put it up. He said yep, and there you go! I had the ball rolling.

Sadly nothing has come out of it. Nobody has called yet, but it's only a few days, so I'll wait it out.

    Next steps:

    - Ask local newsagents if I can put my ad up in their window
    - Put advert up in more shops around my area
    - Get business cards made (anyone know any recommendations - preferably cheap pls!)
    - Cross my fingers someone bites on my shop ad

    Try vistaprint for business cards.

All of the secondary, and many of the elementary, schools here have a central list of tutors that they can provide students and parents.

    Update time!!!

Ok so I've put my advert up in about 15 shops dotted around the city - some of the newsagents charged me a small fee to list in their window but I forked out. Let's see how it goes.

Unfortunately no one has contacted just yet. Hope someone will soon.

Also ordered some business cards from vistaprint (thank you czacza). Cannot wait to get them in my hands. First person I'm handing one to is my mum!

Ok I've been into overdrive today and yesterday.

I've got my advert up in over 50 places. I'm exhausted. I've focused on nothing else. I have it in some libraries, gyms, shops you name it. I'm gonna have something to eat and resting for the rest of the day.

Regards to people contacting nothing as of yet. Fingers crossed something bites soon.

Also - got my business cards! They look great and I feel all professional and stuff!

I wouldn't hang any more until you get some action on the ones you have out already.

I completely agree Always. It's clearly not working as I still haven't got anything. Admittedly I did start to get discouraged a bit, but I'm also proud of the amount of effort I've put in (though even the smallest success would be so welcome!).

I posted myself onto 4 online tutor sites. Actually quite difficult what to write. I checked through a few other profiles and copied bits from a few of them which looked good. So I'm hoping that works out soon.

Cross your fingers for me everyone!

Been a while since last update.

I've still not given up, and though I haven't had any students yet, I did get a few calls.

I've now listed myself on 6 tutoring sites, got 5,000 flyers printed and delivered around my area, and created a facebook page and been going onto local groups and trying to be active. When it's been appropriate I've listed my facebook page.

A lot of this stuff has been done really recently, so I'm hoping that something hits soon.

Call me optimistic, but I have a good feeling it will soon. The reason I say this is because I've had three phone calls about tuition. They all sounded reasonably enthusiastic and eager, but never called me back to take up tutoring with me.

Has this happened to anyone else? If so what do you think I'm doing wrong - and do you think I should try call them back? I don't want to be a nuisance, but do you think I would be if I happened to just give them a little nudge?

I don't know. It's all pretty frustrating. I feel I've worked my ass off, but nothing has struck yet.

I am trying to look on the positive side. As a friend told me: I wasn't initially even getting calls, now I am. I'm step closer, and soon someone has to bite.

    What do you guys think?

How are you responding with regards to the cost/tuition? It seems like some are feeling out various options, and ending up with a different option.

Hi mathmagic. Hmmm... not sure you know. I didn't pay much attention if I'm honest. I think some of them asked to confirm the price was £20, and then I said yes, and they seemed ok. I don't know, I was nervous talking to them on the phone if I'm honest so maybe that made them feel weird?

Does that answer the question? And is there anything you're thinking about which I might have missed?

I think a lot of people start feeling out tutors before they've really committed to starting tutoring.

Hard to say without actually asking the parents. If you sounded too nervous / not well "put together"/prepared, then that might have worried them. You might sketch out and practice some key responses to questions that you think will commonly be asked, and then go in with full confidence, believing in what you are offering.

The only other thing (again, without specifically surveying parents) I can think of is the cost in relation to the other tutors. Do you have an idea of how much others in the area are charging? If it's too low or too high relative to the others, that could turn them away, too.

I guess one other aspect -- do you have your qualifications and any references readily/easily available for potential clients to look at?

I charge $50/hr and I make roughly half ($27,500) of my current teaching salary ($55,000) doing it part time (8-10 hours per week). All of my tutoring money goes into savings, though. My goal is purchase my first home outright — I’m 25 so I still have a lot left to go...

gr3t - I have a feeling you're right. Hopefully someone will bite soon.

mathmagic - that's a brilliant idea. I remember when I was interviewing for jobs to practice interview answers so that you could reel them off calmly when the right time came. Makes complete sense that should work for this too. Thank you.

Regarding costs I'm not particularly expensive. I'd say I'm average/ ever-so-slightly below. I don't know, maybe I should lower it.

Pmf - wow that's amazing, especially at 25. How did you find your students?

    Update time!

Got one more call yesterday. We spoke for a bit and they said they would speak with their son and get back to me. I'm hoping they do. It would be such a relief to just have one person after all of this. I'm proud (and a little surprised) by the amount of effort I've put in, but oh my lord would it feel good to nab a student at last. I'm exhausted!

I private tutored some students in physics, chemistry, and pre-calculus and word got around to other parents that students’ grades were going from D’s and F’s to straight A’s. They then started inquiring about me and now I get calls daily. It’s crazy how successful my tutoring business has become, but I’m not complaining! After what czacza said she charges I’m wondering if I should raise my rates. I think I will steadily raise them. For example, I know of one teacher who charges $120/hr and parents pay it!!! ;)

I’m happy for you! I didn’t do anywhere near that amount of work to get started. I basically did nothing, haha.

    Wow that's amazing.

I wonder if you could answer a few Qs:

    1) What do think is the one or two most important thing you have to do as a tutor to get such great results for your students?

    2) What differences do you think there is between tutoring and teaching? As in what should be changed if you want to be a successful tutor?
