Moving from K to 2nd - Help!

    I just finished my first year as a kindergarten teacher and am moving to second grade! I'm really excited but overwhelmed now that I've looked at the common core standards and overall how different it is from K and 1 (both of which I am way more familiar).

    Here are some burning questions I have…
    -I plan on doing Daily 5 - any Daily 5 pros out there that can let me know their thoughts on the difference between Word Work (Should they practice phonics concepts? - We use Fundations) and Work on Writing? Do you do Writer's Workshop separately and do they practice those skills during Work on Writing?
    -Do you use Daily 3 for Math? Where do you find your games/resources? Luckily we have a new math program - Expressions, that is scripted. Anyone use this program and like/dislike it?
    -Community supplies versus pencil boxes - I have desks (wish I had tables). What has worked well for you?
    -Not sure how I feel about a reward system but definitely willing to try it…..would love to know ideas/experience.
    -Morning work - Should they answer question of the day? Do a worksheet with Math/ELA concepts?
    -How do you do Morning Meeting? What concepts do you cover? How long and how frequently do you do MM?
    -How do you use tech in your classroom? iPads? Computers? etc.
    -Homework - any and all info/ideas/tips.

    Any tips, suggestions, advice, etc are greatly greatly greatly appreciated! I'm excited but anxious!!!! Thank you in advance :)

    I just finished my second year in 2nd grade - LOVED my first year...last year was a bit...rough, but the age is awesome and I really enjoyed seeing their progress. I'll try to answer your questions as best as I can and offer advice on what I would change if I was going back to 2nd this year (I'm doing reading intervention):

    I'm not a Daily 5 "pro" by any means, but here's my :2cents:
    - Word Work was a station where students would practice the spelling words. In the past, I had students practice their spelling words with Playdough, letter stamps, WikkiStix, etc, but if I did it all over again I would have them practice the RULES. For example, after I had discussed the rule for when to add -es, -ies, or -s to make a noun plural, I would have students practice this rule with unfamiliar words in a station.

    - Work on Writing...I usually had a separate time for Writer's Workshop and this station was used mainly for students who hadn't finished a story to continue working on it. If they were finished with a story, they could use my Silly Story Starters or picture prompts to create a new story. I probably didn't utilize this station as well as I should have. I would have liked to have seen more peer editing being used, so you may consider that....



    -I only did Math workshop for half of 1 year so I was still quite a newbie at it at the end of the year. I used the acronym MATH, that had the same structure as Daily 5. (M)ath Facts - mostly flashcards for kids to drill one another, (A)t your seat - this was mostly coloring pages, connect-the-dot, etc. type stuff that included math review. I found some cool eBooks through Scholastic to use as part of this station, (T)eacher's Choice - this station was what I used for their math grade each week and included a practice page of whatever concept we were covering in class...I also used this station for math games, but students HAD to complete their worksheet before they could play any games, and (H)ands-on - this station included anything that used math manipulatives. I found most of my ideas on Pinterest or through resource books. We didn't use Expressions so I can't help you there.

    -I used community supplies my first year and last year each student had their own individual supplies. HANDS-DOWN I prefer community supplies!

    -Rewards: I used whole class rewards (warm fuzzies in a jar - i.e. pom-poms) and a ticket system for individual rewards. For the tickets, I had a drawing every Friday and the winner chose a reward from several options (shoes off for the day, switch seats for the day, show-and-tell, etc). I then threw all the tickets away and we started fresh each Monday. A lot of teachers I worked with used tickets with a "store" where students could use tickets to "purchase" items. That's another idea you may consider

    -I always had Morning Work out for my kids. To cut back on paper I tried to have them keep everything in a notebook. If I used paper, they had to cut it and glue it in their notebooks. I almost always made morning work relevant to what we were discussing or had discussed in class.

    -Morning Meeting - I wish we had a school-wide time scheduled for this, but no such luck. I really had to modify it when it was eating up almost an hour of my morning. I ALWAYS had a poem of the week, which we would read together and discuss. I tried to make the poem relate to a concept we would be learning about that week. When I found out our greetings were taking too long, I modified it to a "meet-and-greet" session where students would greet 3 friends and ask them at least two questions. We discussed the appropriate way to greet one another and respond to a question. I loved morning meeting, but with 28 students it took too long so I really had to cut it back.

    -We had 2 computers in the classroom where students could visit approved websites in their free time. I also used the computers with my struggling readers for certain programs we had through the school. I had 1 iPad which I used mostly with my tutoring group. I wish we had Smartboards!

    -Homework: I really didn't like assigning typical homework. I tried to do a lot of project-based learning with my kids...and math games. I would usually introduce a game in class and once we played it as a group and kids got the hang of it, I would have them take it home to play with their family. I also gave spelling homework, but I wouldn't give out typical spelling homework again...if they had spelling homework it would, once again, be students practicing a rule, not memorizing words.
