I have a severe profound room of middle school students. I am sick of my morning calendar routine and want to spice it up some. Any ideas?? I would like to have the students participating more and have news stories be involved.

    Same boat

I have the same issue - this is my first year teaching. I work in a middle school Cognitive Impairment classroom and just can't think of things to do. I would love to use News 2 You but it is too expensive and the school won't get it for me. Does anyone know anything similar?

    http://slatersoftware.com/document.html

This website has a ton of neat ideas, not QUITE news-2-you, but they're all free! Lots of themes for each month. A few articles about holidays, etc.

You can also do teachertube.com on your computer and play it through your camera!

A subscription to weekly reader is fairly cheap, too - $3.99 per kid per year or something like that. You could probably even ask a parent or parents for a donation for that, if it's not in your budget. You can get that and you get access to the online site which has the weekly reader as an interactive version. Lots of neat stuff you could discuss in a morning meeting, with topics changing weekly.

You can make your own materials and switch them up every once in a while.

What levels are your kids? Are they switch communicators? Ability levels would enable me to give more suggestions!

    Try www.symbolworld.org

It is not as good as News-2-You, but there is quite a bit there.

I have a middle school Life Skills Class and was really bored with my calendar time too. So I changed it to "Lunch Break" since we do it right after lunch. I use the following headers, which I don't use all of each day.

    Word of the Day
    Weather
    Interesting People
    Interesting Places
World News (I use News-2-You for this, but have found other short news stories)
    Amazing Animals
    Daily Poll
    Vocab
    Joke of the Day

Sometime these all relate and sometimes they don't. The kids really seem to enjoy it. Hope this helps or sparks an idea.
