I took it today and got a 147. I was asked to be the HS Math teacher in November, and have until 4/30 to pass the 5161. My background is Music Ed (long story), and I've been out of Math for over 40 years....yes, I'm that old. I used the Cliffnotes book as well as KhanAcademy to study, but will look up the freetech4teachers site, also. Any advice is appreciated!

Read the last post on page 11. I gave some advice on how to pass the test.

    https://www.ets.org/s/praxis/pdf/5161.pdf

Go to page 44 and where it says Discussion Areas: number and quantity you want to be able to answer all those kinds of questions. All the discussion areas "can you questions" were asked on the exam. They can't ask every single one but the ones they did ask were from that list. It cuts out all the filler in the study guide and gets right to the point. Practice questions like that will be very beneficial and if you know how to answer them you will pass the test.

I think ypu should answer the questions CAN YOU....? https://www.ets.org/s/praxis/pdf/5161.pdf
By answer it you can watch videos in Khanacademy and master every topic. I did it and I try to write notes about the concepts I had more trouble to understand. I did buy one test from the ETS just to get the idea what topic is there. I used it many times the same questions just to study the topic there. Other thing you need to get use to the calculator they have it in the website and you can downlad in your computer. It helps a lot. I made 172 and it was my 3 time doing because I get so nervous in tests and my English is not good too. I have a math degree and master in statistics. The test is easy but you need to know what will be there they always can surprise you, so study everything.

Yes! I have worked through those "I can" statements. Took it again today! Got a 150. Still not passing in my state, need a 160, but I was happy at the 12 point improvement I made. I did not think I had improved that much. Hopefully it wasn't a fluke. XD All 8 additional raw points I earned were from the Geometry/Probability and Statistics/Discrete Math portion. My grad program also gives initial licensure, which is why I have to have a Praxis score in to them soon. I'm taking the history Praxis tomorrow (good heavens, I should at least pass that!) so that I will at least have SOME passed Praxis scores turned in to them so I can continue in my program. I still want to beat this math test though because I really do want to teach math! I think it is a beautiful, significant, and highly under-appreciated subject. But I think math is kind of like music: you can't just cram. You have to really practice and know your stuff; it takes time. Thanks all! Good luck to everyone!

That's great news!! Obviously passing would have been the best case scenario but you're making improvement. Keep pushing forward with the math and you will surely pass. I would try to get that History Praxis out of the way and then devote more time to the Math Praxis so you don't have to keep trying to re-take the Math Praxis over and over. Math is a rewarding subject and you will learn even more once you start teaching it.

Anyone interested in studying for the Praxis 5161 together? Perhaps via Google hangout?

Hey guys! I'm new to the site, studying for 5161 (I take it again on 5/11/18) and I'm glad I stumbled on this website. I took the test on 3/17/18, (didn't pass), but I didn't study at all. Just went in based on what I knew. I got in there and apparently I forgot a few things. My score in the first section was amazing. But my score in the second section (Geometry, Prop/Stats/Discrete Math) was so low that it couldn't help. I got 28 right in the first section, and a whopping 1 in the second one. I noticed those "Can I" questions and literally all of those were on my test. I was so annoyed when I discovered this. lol I'm using Cliff Notes in conjunction with Math Is Fun. The Cliff Notes book is great, but is unnecessarily wordy (at times). I teach 11th and12th grade science and math (Physics, Pre-Calc, AP Calc, and Advanced Algebra/Trig). Majored in Finance, minored in Physics and Math. I passed the Physics and Business Education test on my first try. My state had a rule where if you had 24 hours in a content area you can teach it. I came in during that time, but now the state is requiring everyone to take their respective content knowledge exams. REGARDLESS if they have a degree or not. I took Physics and Business Education in January and February of this year, passed with no problems. I feel like I overdid it by scheduling Math in March... Maybe I was burnt out? I've been skimming through the comments. Any advice on how you guys passed would help. I hate that they give us 60 questions, but only 50 count. Completely pointless.

Using the study guide and making sure you can answer the "can you" questions will give you the best chance of passing. I thought Cliff Notes was the best book and you can probably get away with not even using that book. I would spend the money on the two Praxis tests from ETS and focus on the "can you" questions from the study guide. Anything you are confused with just Google search it or use YouTube. The test doesn't ask too many in depth questions but questions from a lot of different areas. The time and amount of questions that are asked is such a pain. Keep pushing forward and you will eventually pass.

    Hello y'all!

I just wanted to chime in: I took the test on July 11th and the ending screen gave me the raw scores as well as a possible final score:

    -26 Geometry etc
    -13 Statistics, etc
    possible score 173

Official scores will be out on the 26th! Let's see if the possible score was dead on... or if I celebrated too soon!

I extend to you my unofficial congratulations. Let’s not celebrate early as that would be premature, but personally I think it is very probable you passed because it is extremely unlikely you dropped 14 points between now and when you receive your official scaled score.

It's possible for the official scaled score to differ from the unofficial one, but it's darned rare that that happens.

    Hi Everyone,

First of all thanks for all the information here. It has been super helpful during this stressful period. I just took my test on 1/5/19. I got:

    Raw 34
    Unofficial 163

I took several practice test and I thought this one was especially difficult. I barely passed but that's good enough for me. I wanted to share my info in appreciation of all the others who have shared.

I took the math Praxis last Thursday and thought the same thing... it seemed significantly harder than any of the practice tests I did. I passed, and that's really all I care about in the end.
