I have tried... and tried... and tried... all year.... to teach about how to indent a paragraph while writing (not typing). I have modeled. I have shown books and other writing samples that indent paragraphs. I have shown them to put down a thumb before starting a paragraph. I have physically helped kids do this.

Most of my kids still don't get it.

    Any other ideas?

I have an anchor chart in my class of what I want my students' writing to look like. For our reader's response, for example, the anchor chart has a rubric on it that shows how many points they get for each section. I take off points if they don't indent and it shows that on the chart. Constant feedback and loss of points has seemed to help.

I have done the same. I truly think it is developmental and like anything else, they need to practice. We may be modeling and discussing indentation, but students need to do it several times on their own before it becomes natural.
Also, try pointing it out during small group reading, especially when reading chapter books.
You could also have them edit their classmates' work and highlight where it should be indented.

Let them draw in a line to indicate the spacing with a colored pencil or marker. Adding in color may attract them to the habit.

This is a great idea. Posted so kids can refer to it while getting started.

Grade 2? Just not something I'd worry about too much.

This is a battle I choose not to fight with second graders.
