I am planning my lessons for the first day of class with my ESL students. I have two questions:

Is it okay to create class rules with ESL students? I tried that last year and it went okay. If so, would you start creating the class rules with the students on the first day that you see them, or would you spend your first period doing getting to know you activities?

What are some fun community building, getting to know you activities I can do with my kindergarten and first grade ESL students? I am worried I might overwhelm them if I start creating the class rules with them on the first day of school.

How about involving them in the creation of class rules? Given the right choices, examples of how some behaviors might play out, you may get total buy-in. I would consider it with this population.

My bad - sorry! I hit the send button twice, apparently.

I didnt even see my esl students on the first day, besides testing some kinder babies.
I would try to stick with the same general rules the general teacher uses (assuming you are a pull out teacher)
If they are with you all day, just stick with basics. Raise hand, dont talk while others are talking, remember low voices, how to sit in chair/carpet, nice words, and how to line up/walk in the hallway.
I would tell them the first time you have them, so that the routines are established and expectations are made.
You could have them model it for you/each other.
