Everything was going great, then the last period of the day came.

    Man !

Stress is why Subs have a hard time. I would cancel today, except the Administration sent Subs letters
saying if you cancel jobs is a reason that they fire you.

Next week, I think I will let the phone ring and not answer. I may or may only do a day or two at the most.

Are you subbing in just one school? If you're having trouble there, you may want to find additional districts so you can pick and choose where / when you want to be available.

You didn't describe what happened last period or how you
Managed the situation (and please don't tell us it involved writing names on the board). Grow a pair.

I am also curious as to how you handled that class ( and I have an interesting picture in my mind of a lion tamer...)

I don't write names on the board.

If I write names , I give them to the Teacher. ( and the Sub Office if it is bad enough.)

I was trying to call roll.

First the students were all to be released to go have fun. (In about 5 minutes or less - closer to less)

I had a long roll sheet with a lot of students names.

Half the students were gone - to band / etc other student activities.

If the students are not in the classroom , no matter where they are, they are to be marked absent. (Then were they are they are marked here)

    Sooooooo

3 or 4 students kept hollering * Here ! When I called out most every name.

Randomly, the other students kept saying - Here ! That student is here !

I ask * Where ? Then they say band / etc.

I had to explain, that I had to mark the students absent who were not in the room then band or where ever the other students were would mark them here.

It did not do any good.

So, I have to keep starting over and over on calling roll. It got so bad I sent one student to the office. (One of those that kept saying * Here ! Here ! at every name.)

I had to get a Principal to come into the room , so I could just take roll.

    Then release the students.

That was a bad end to a otherwise good day.

Do you couldn't just figure out to have kids sit down and give names one by one? Seriously you have to think on your feet. And STOP CALLING THE PRINCIPAL.

And btw, calling for help is not putting on your 'lion tamer suit'.

I needed to call roll fast, that is do it the way I normally do it.

Yes, I could have figured out who was in the class and who was not in 10 or 20 minutes. I did not have the 10 or 20 minutes. I had maybe 3 minutes.

    Anyway, I got it done.

Alternatively, had you made the students wait to be released for wherever they were anxious to go while you painstakingly took roll one by one, maybe they would have reconsidered their behavior.

You got it done in three
Minutes? With disruptions and the P showing up? Doubtful

    It did take longer.

The 3 or 4 minutes would have been the goal, before all the * Here ! Here ! They are Here !

    It did get done.

All you had to do was ask each kid his / her name. They would have had the chance to give one name only, most likely their own (why would they give a friend's name and then have themselves marked absent?).
When they give you the name, find it on the roster, cross it off. Done. 3 minutes.

I would have told them that nobody was getting released for anything until I had a correct attendance record. When they called out, I would have stood there silently becuase what do I care if they get out in time for fun? They would have to be the ones to care.

I swear you call the principal more than any sub I have ever known. It's not their job to manage your classroom and if you can't manage the classroom then perhaps they need to be finding a sub Who can. I feel very badly and sympathetic toward your administration because it seems that the principal gets called for every little thing every day by you. Do you have to wonder why the kids don't respect you?

I don't even think this is a real person. Sounds like a middle schooler. The style of writing is so juvenile. And there is no way that a sub who writes up this many people and sends this many students to the office would keep subbing. Unless they have absolutely no other subs.
