Hello everybody! I plan to take both the Praxis 5161 & 5169. Any suggestions/recommendations on the best resources or study material to prep for these test? Any info will be greatly appreciated!

I took the 5169 exam in April 2018 and failed by a point. I didn't have enough time to finish. I know if I had finished the last 10 questions, I would have passed it. I retook the exam on yesterday and passed the test. The testing site where I went automatically gave me my score. I passed with a 166. In Louisiana 165 is required. Now, I was in the same situation where I was running out of time, but this time I made sure to at least place an answer for each question.

    So I would say this:

    Time Contraints:
    1. Pace yourself for the exam. there are 55 question and 2 hrs to take the exam which is roughly 2 min per question.
    2. If you feel you are running out of time, be sure to at least place an answer for each question. The test is based on the amount of answers you get correct

    Materials:
I used Mometrix and Cliffnotes Praxis 5169 books. I also you-tubed khan academy (which is awesome). Khan academy really breaks down any explanations you need. you can also sign up for khan academy and personalize your lessons for practice materials. REA (which is a company that makes books for standardized test), also makes these laminated quick reference charts. I would suggest the algebra and geometry ones. These cards came in handy for me especially the morning of the test when I was trying to remember all of the of formulas. Take as many practice exams as possible. The books I suggested has practice exams, but ETS also gives you simulated exams that is just like the real exam..

    Test itself:
The test touches on almost a little bit of everything.
    - I found that I had more linear function problems than anything.
-I had one metric and one volume question. The volume formula was given. All other formulas are not given. So you will need to memorize those formulas.
    - know the difference between rational and irrational numbers.
-know when to add and subtract exponents
    -LCM and GCF
-geometry - I had problems with circles, rectangles, and central arcs
    -probability
-recognize the linear graphs and functions
-interpret whether the data given is a function.
    -congruence
-they did have a few simple ones like calculating sales tax.
    etc.

So I would say, know as much as you can about everything. Both test that I took were different. There were a few familiar problems on the first exam that were on the second. I found the second exam was harder than the first. So study everything, but make sure to know those linear functions.

some of the questions on the test are meant to confuse you. I found myself pondering over certain questions because they were worded to play with your head, when they are asking the simplest thing. Since I have a tendency to read into everything, cutting into my time- resulting in running out of time to complete the exam. So, if you feel yourself pondering as I did, make the best educated guess and move on.

    Good luck.

I quickly realized if I found myself going through long calculations, I had missed something that should be obvious. If that happens, stop and read the question anew.

Thanks so much for this post! Do you think the REA book with the practice exams are very similiar to the actual praxis?

And also, without giving the question, could you give an example of what you mean by a linear function type of
    Problem?

    Thank you!!

Sorry I took so long to respond. I try to check my post in between my 9-5 job. REA helped. its not as detailed as I would have liked it to be. this is why I had extra materials to help me. If you want a test that actually simulates the exam, go to ETS website and purchase the practice test. It is an exact simulation of the computerized exam. It just has different questions.

Linear functions are graphs. they may give you a problem and ask you to identify what the graph would look like. This was the hardest portion, I found
