I always have at least one. I don't make a big deal about it, but when a child is handing out their birthday cupcakes at lunch and this child can't have one, I always make a point of whispering to them something like "Boy, I sure do respect people who live by their beliefs -- even when it isn't easy!"

About the birthday dance, it's pretty much just free-form jammin'...I teach Pre-K, so....we dance often!

I am going to decorate the penny pencil boxes with their names using paint pens. I will place a birthday pencil, sticker, and birthday card in it. I think I will add a deal of the germ killers we got at Staples a few weeks back and a small toy from the toy chest. That's all folks!

I have a poster with all the kids birthdays on it. Around it I have loot bags that are full of little goodies that were donated at church. I have them hung up all year so when it's the kids birthday they get to go up and grab a bag and a card that I made on Vista Print. Easy and no work for me!

What we did with a child like you mentioned was excused him to go to the office. He didn't mind because his parents had "pounded" it into him that he does not get involved with such things. We felt bad for him but he seemed fine with it. He should be about 18 right now & I bet he can't wait to attend his OWN FIRST Birthday party without his parents knowing, in CA!
He was only 5 years old.

I give out goody bags. I tend to go a bit overboard, but one year I had a student who told me that the only present she got for her birthday was the bag I gave her. I keep thinking I might have another student like that someday.

My middle son has a summer birthday and gets really upset about the gift thing. If teachers did something special for the summer and holiday birthdays....but, sadly, many don't.

As for me, I have 150 students. I don't do anything.

As the mother of a type I diabetic, I'm a little sensitive to food gifts. Most teachers would do something different for the diabetic child, but it's really hard on him. I have to hand it to my child's teacher this past year. Every time there was something going on that involved sweets she made sure there was something sugar free for him to eat. She even sent out notices at the begining of the year informing the parents that there was a diabetic child in the class, and that if they planned on having a classroom party, to make sure his needs were included in the menu.
