Do you usually use longer chapter books like- Because of Winn Dixie, Bud, Not Buddy, etc. or do you tend to use more short stories. I would like to use the longer books because I feel like students would really be interested in them, but it is hard to focus on your target skill--sometimes it might not match. What do you do?

I've done both, depending on the students. If you do chapter books, try to pick a focus skill for each chapter. I never worried about my guided reading skills matching the whole group skill... The whole point of the groups was to differentiate.
