Anyone else survive their first week yet?

Mine was a doozy. Kids started Wednesday, but we had meetings on Monday and Tuesday and I wore myself down. I got mastitis and a terrible sore throat, which resulted in a lost voice by Thursday. I had to borrow a microphone system to whisper in. Not to mention the flu-like blessings of the mastitis. But I made it to the weekend, and the kids seem like a good group.

I do have a 10 year old female version of Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory, minus the laugh track. I can see a lot of work ahead of me in that area-I'd love to talk with anyone who might have had a student like this in the past.

    Anyone else start yet?

Glad it's over for ya! This morning, I was going to start a thread titled How Was Your First Week? but since my first full week won't be over until the 23rd, I didn't start it yet. I start this Thurs., the 15th. :)

Kids don't come back to school until Sept. 3rd. I have new teacher orientation next week, and teacher work week the week before the kids come back

I just finished week 3 and so far, it's been great! I have a great group of kids this year. I have been so exhausted though that I fell asleep at 8:15 last night and slept for 12 hours. I totally needed it!

I started. It is inner-city, so I had a rough week to say the least...

Aw, giraffe. Wanna talk about it?

Mkbren-I hear ya. I know it's because I'm sick, but I can hardly get through the days because I'm so tired. Henry is up twice a night, Erik is up at 4 to leave at 5 and he doesn't get home until 8:30pm, we're still living out of boxes. It's just too much. I'm completely overwhelmed. I'm holding out for Labor Day weekend.

    I finished my first week.

My kids seem pretty good. I have one class of strong personalities and immature bits. Naturally I take them to lunch. I am also teaching a section of math. I'm English certified.

I have one week left. I teach the same kids for 4 years in a separate setting special needs class. I am already stressing about 2 of the kids who are really needy. I'm wondering how much worse they got over the summer. Both kids come from families who don't spend a lot of time with them.

Students had their first week, but my classes don't start until Monday. My auditions for after-school groups also start on Monday, so I'll be busy.

Ah. We're working on it. They made some improvements on Monday. The class will split soon, as I am almost at the cap. I'll get more new students after the split, but we can separate some of the behaviors.

I'm also still looking for another job since I am at-will at a charter.

    Hope you're feeling better!

Hugs Jem! The first week is exhausting no matter what and going to work while getting up in the night with a baby is even harder. Be sure to ate your vitamins and extra B vitamins. Go to bed early, the boxes can wait and you'll be able to deal with it all better.

First, I would talk to last year's teacher and the GT coordinator. If she knows the material, give her an independent project with a lot of choice. If you think she would've responsible, have her design the project even. If she doesn't know the information, she's going to pick it up fast and want to know more. Design an open extra credit project and offer it to everyone, but have a private conversation with her about completing it.

Good info about GT and hypersensitivity and how it affects the classroom- http://www.sengifted.org/archives/articles/overexcitability-and-the-gifted

We don't start until Wednesday, can't believe so many schools are already in session? Are you all on "balanced schedule" or "year round"?

I'm on an extended school year schedule. 197 kid days, 221 teacher days. Kids are in school 8:30-4. (Really 8-4 because they all eat breakfast)

We get a week off in October, two weeks in December, and a week off in April. School ends second week of May and resumes first week of August. We have students 7:40-3:00.

Teachers work by days. Maybe 180? Students attend by hours, but generally go 176 days. We have enough extra minutes built into the day that teachers can go up to 5 days without students and still get student hours in.

I start tomorrow with three days of trainings, etc., and students start Thursday. Sorry to hear of your health problems. The flu-like comment reminded me of last year (my first year)--I got strep throat within 2 weeks of school starting! I hope I have built up my immunity to the teen germs, ha ha.

    Feel better soon!

To those of you who've already started--I hope it's getting better. Some of you seemed to have a rough time.

:hugs: I cannot imagine getting through your first week with mastitis!!!!!!!! And a babe up at night. Good lord. You will get through it but I hope you ask for help. Do you have family nearby? Grocery delivery? Anything you can outsource at this time, I would in a heartbeat. :hugs:

Jem, mastitis!? How long until that feels better? Hopefully antibiotics can make it feel better right away. That is amazing you are still working!

Are your in-laws able to help at all? And your husband is still working in the city every day!?

Is Sheldon the deadpan sarcastic type? I'm a pop-culture zero nowadays, basically because my kids' can't watch that kind of thing and I'm conked out by the time they go to bed and I finish my work. (first world problems, I know...)

Had my first week of meetings and prepping. First week with kids starting tomorrow (12th). I'm not nervous or anything and I'm a first year teacher. Either I have a lot of confidence or I really don't know what I'm getting myself into. LMAO
