Mable I love the idea about the letter! What a great idea! Do you have the students share their letters with the class? I am going to have to steal that idea!

I hate to be a downer, but for safety reasons, do you really want to send your kids names flying all over town? We tried to do a balloon launch at my old school, but the town canceled it because of litter/environmental concerns....:sorry:

iteachm123, that is exactly what I did. I also shared the origin of my name which is quite unique, and we focus on how special our names are. It really helped to stop kids from teasing each other.

You could do a graph of "First Day Feelings" and have 4 or so hand drawn face pictures depicting happy, scared, excited, nervous, etc. and have kids color and put their name under picture and then do a class pictograph. They could also do speech bubbles and draw self pictures beside speech bubbles and say how they felt on first day. Sometimes those self portraits are so cute done by primary age kids!

I use a special font for my computer to make a first day writing sheet that has the primary lines. Students can copy the sentences: "Today is the first day of school. I am in second grade. this is my best printing. Can you read it easily?" Since it is copying, it is appropriate for a warm up while you are busy takin attendance, calming anxious students, collecting materials, etc. Students can do this independently regardless of their level, and it is a great informal writing sample. I hand it back the last day of school so students can see how much they've grown, since by then they're writing in cursive (most of them). If you can't find a primary lines font on the computer, you could also hand make one too, using primary paper.

I'd love a copy of your packet but I can't send you a PM for some reason. I just registered today so perhaps I'm not a seasoned member yet.
