My class drives me batty. Maybe it's this group. Maybe it's the age. But it seems like someone (or many someones) are humming or singing to themselves every minute of the day. Ack!! Does anyone else have this "problem?"

Haha! I have certain students who like to sing as they work, but no humming here.

HAHA YES! I have a couple hummers, some noise makers, and even a whistler. I think they don't even realize they're doing it half the time until I tell them to stop! lol.

Last year I had several hummers/whistlers/singers and it drove me crazy! After talking to mom though of one hummer, she admitted that she hummed to herself at work too. I just had to deal with it because even after I'd ask them to stop, it would start back up 5 minutes later.

I have a hummers, singers, noise makers every year. This year I have more than usual. I find that some first graders are clueless they are making noise and some are very aware and purposefully trying to distract.

I wish they would at least carry a tune. Most of them are just randomly humming notes

Yup! Sometimes they all break out into song together. I don't mind, but the whistlers annoy me.

I have several who sing while they work. I have a few who will hum as they work. Then I have a cóuple who want to whistle and that's where I put my foot down. I just find it way too distracting.

I did until I started playing quiet instrumental music in the background.

OH MY YES!! For some strange reason, whistling drives me absolutely mental! My ears literally ache when I hear it!

I don't really have any hummers or whistlers. Occasionally one of the kids will hum or whistle but it doesn't happen everyday. However I have that talks to himself!!!!!!! Actually I am not sure he is talking to himself or someone around him but he talks way under his breath so I can just barely hear him. THAT drives me crazy!

I have a couple hummers and a whistler this year. They are usually not too bad, but they do go through stretches...

:lol:LOL I don't know why but this thread title makes me laugh. Anyhow, no, my class doesn't hum, rather they prefer to sing. It's funny now, but when it's actually happening I find it VERY annoying. There's always this one little girl who is singing under her breath. I used to go, "WHO IS THAT HUMMING/SINGING" when I first started teaching, but now I've gotten smarter. When I hear it, I just walk in the direction slowly pretending to be looking at something else then I can normally hone in on it.

I honestly think that the kids don't even notice they're doing it because I can get thisclose to a child and they'll keep rocking out and even jump when I say their name.

Normally I am good natured about it and will nicely say, "Please save the singing for music class" or "Please keep the singing in your head, or I will have to move your color."

If it's a kid that keeps doing it, does it everyday or I'm in the middle of talking about something important, then I do immediate coloring changes on the behavior chart.

EDIT: I just noticed this is a 2nd grade forum. I used to teach 2nd and am currently in 1st. Oddly enough, I DO remember more humming in 2nd, whereas first grade it's more low singing. I think that the humming in 2nd stems from them being told over and over to stop/suppress their singing in 1st grade.

Poor kids are probably like, "I can't sing, I can't hum...what am I to do with this song in my heart?!"

I only tell them to stop if it's disruptive, too loud, or bothering the kids around them. If it's not causing an issue and it helps them be productive, I don't mind them rocking out! It's not always to my taste, but I don't want to stifle their joy.

Awww, that's actually really nice of you Bison. I'm okay with the humming unless we're doing a task that requires quiet (like taking a test) or I'm giving directions/saying something the students need to be listening to.

I have some kids that get so into their singing, that I'll stop talking and stare at them along with everyone else in the class, and they'll keep singing, then suddenly they stop, look up and see everyone staring at them. I love the 4 stages of the class singers. It goes like:

    1. (how come it got so quiet all of a sudden?)
    2. (ah! everyone is staring at me including the teacher)
    3. (omg, i'm so embarassed!)
    4. :( (I'm sorry Ms. Catz, please don't make me go to time out)

Inside I am going:  and

 Kids are so weird! I wish I could go back and talk to my old primary teachers. I bet we did a lot of the same annoying stuff. That doesn't make it any less annoying but gives me hope that maybe they'll grow out of those weird behaviors.

I have students who sing, hum, and move around too much. I think it is 2nd grade.

It is getting worse. This was never an issue before. Two years ago it was never silent in my room, always a low level buzz of humming and mouth noises. I think they are self soothing, but it wasn't soothing me at all!
