Welcome to A to Z, JHog.

Check out some of the links and suggestions earlier in this thread, eh? And don't hesitate to post specific questions about the material.

    Need Help-I'm taking the CSET-Spanish Sept. 2010

    Hi everyone!

Would someone please help me I am taking the CSET Spanish Subtest I,II, & III in September 2010. What books and tips do you recommend for taking the exam. I need all the help you can provide. I'm taking this test for the first time. I am pretty nervous about taking this test. I've found it difficult to find test prep. books for the exam. Thank you for all your help.

This is for the single subject Spanish credential, right, rather than for bilingual certification?

Yes it is Teacher Groupie. I am taking the same test, but I am taking my time. In Sept. I'm only taking Subtest IV. It seems like there are less resources for these tests, but I have a few text books. Basically you need 3 different types of texts IMO. Do you have any suggestions?

Wait: Subtest IV is for the bilingual credential, not for the Spanish credential. The nearest equivalent that you want is probably Subtest II. See http://www.cset.nesinc.com/CS16_testselection.asp.

I hope you'll still be able to change your registration.

For Subtest III, CaliforniaGold, you may need a good review of the grammar of Spanish, including academic Spanish. A textbook might be the right choice, but you may also find a good deal of information online. Try Googling "spanish language literature culture".

For Subtest IV, which deals with bilingual education and with you can use materials for CTEL, including Diaz-Rico & Weed's compendious but excellent The Crosscultural, Language and Academic
    Development Handbook
    - you want the third edition or later.

For Subtest V, you're looking for material on geography, history, politics and culture, and the Googling I suggested above should work. You're likely to need to follow up links from the Web sites that result. Some Wikipedia searches may also give you good leads.

Thank you Teacher Groupie. Your suggestions have motivated me to keep on researching and studying. I will get going on the the references right away (although I have been studying from my own ;).

Curious, how difficult you found the CSET for Spanish to be and what preparation materials you found most useful. Thanks

    Spanish CSET

Just signed up for the CSET Spanish. Feeling a little overwhelmed with all the mentioned study material. Is it possible for someone to "narrow down" one or two resources for each section to focus on? I'm concerned about spending too much time on study material that may not be all that imperative to passing the test. I have a BA in Spanish language, but since its been 10 years (ouch!) I may be a little "rusty". Anyone have any suggestions?

Welcome to A to Z, JVM.

Are you seeking a single subject credential (to teach Spanish to English speakers) or a BCLAD certification (to teach in Spanish)?

    Hi TeacherGroupie,

CSET for the single subject credential, is there any updated information or study guides. I'm planning on taking the CSET for Spanish this coming fall.

    Thank you,

    JVM

For Spanish grammar review, including the technical terms, Farrell & Farrell's Lado a lado is a very good resource: it examines parallel structures in English and Spanish sentence grammar, in Spanish.

For language learning, materials for CTEL.

For culture, Wikipedia pages on history and literature in the Spanish-speaking world: pay attention to all the places in the world in which Spanish is a significant language.

    Hi TeacherGroupie,
I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your help. I took the CSET, Spanish Subtest II and Subtest III this past September on the same day; and I took Spanish Subtest I this past October. Well, I received my test results for Subtest I this past Friday. Guess What? I passed them all! Woohoo! I found Subtest II to be the toughest one; when I walked out of the testing center I was sure I had failed it. I found Farrell & Farrell's Lado a Lado very helpful for Subtest I. The CSET sample test questions on the CSET site, are a really good representation of the actual tests.

    Thanks,
    JVM
