How do you set up the desks in your classroom? I have 25 desks in my room, and I almost always end up with five rows of five. I have tried a U-shape formation before, but my room seems too cramped when I do that. Other teachers in my department use that arrangement, but it seems like the kids are on top of one another and are more easily distracted, as well. I usually do a lot of group work, so I just have students move their desks after I give instructions. What works best for you?

I have 30 desks in my room this year. If I could have a few less, it would give us a lot more space, but... oh well. Currently I have 4 groups of 6 in horseshoe-shapes and one group of 6 in a clump. So far, so good.

Back when I didn't have a million kids in each class, I really liked a sort of "face off" arrangement. Short rows of maybe three deep, with everyone facing a center aisle that ran from the front of the room to the back of the room (desks on either side of the aisle). No student was ever more than 6 feet away from the center aisle, easy for me to get to and easy for me to see/monitor.

I have 38 desks in a U-shape, and I like it because all the rows are no more than 3 desks deep. I'm pretty sure I'll have 42 in my first period this year, so that means I have to go find four more left-handed desks so I can squeeze them in.

I have 8 groups of 4 desks per group lined up in two rows.

It works really well for me because I do a lot of group work, but I do have to re-arrange into rows for tests.

I have inward-facing rows. I used to make a U-shape that was 2 desks deep, but when I got my SmartBoard I had to do away with the bottom part of my U. I have 34 desks in my room. I really need 35, but I couldn't fit anymore desks into it.

I arrange my desks in groups of 3 or 4, scattered around the room.

Ima Teacher, your classroom is really nice! It looks like it's about the same size as my room.

    Thanks.

My room is approximately 29 by 29. The side you can't see has only two desks per row because there is a table, bookshelf, and computer center on that wall.

Ima Teacher, I really like your desks arrangement. I was going to do the same ole' arrangement as last year but I am inspired to try your model.

    Thanks!

I had 25 desks in my classroom this past year as well. The desks were broken up into groups of various sizes: 2 groups of 6, 1 group of 5, 2 groups of 4.

I have two rows in a U shape. I have 25 desks but only two of my classes have 25 kids. All my other classes are under 20 so I don't think it will be too cramped.
