    Hi friends,
So I got my CBEST results recently, and to be honest I'm just confused. I passed, which is grand and wonderful, but my nearly perfect reading and math scores were tempered by a nearly failing (39, I think) writing score. This is pretty weird, considering that I've always done fine on timed essays without working too hard, passed all four English CSET subtests on my first try, etc. So my question is: will anyone look closely at/care about my miserable writing score, or does it really only matter that I passed? Should I take it again, request a score verification, or just shut up? The score report said my first essay was fine, but the second one had issues with "Organization" and "Structure and Conventions." I mean...structure and conventions? Rhetorical Force or Appropriateness, sure, but I'm a freakin grammar-nazi! I'm extremely willing to swallow my pride if people think this is unimportant, I'm just confused and wanted to chat about it. :)
    Thanks, and happy new year!

Nobody cares what your CBEST scores were as long as you passed. They aren't even printed on the transcripts you get to give employers. The only people who asked for the entire form complete with socres was my credential program. FWIW I scored high on reading and math, and a lot lower on the writing, and neither the credential program nor prospective employers ever mentioned it. The score doesn't reflect the fact that I am a very good business writer. The CBEST authors are looking for a textbook five paragraph essay. I hadn't done one of those in at least 30 years and it showed.

Point the first: Score verification may not even be offered: since two readers score each piece of writing for CBEST and CSET - and since a third reader gets called in if the scores diverge too widely - the assumption is that these scores have already been through a kind of verification process. In any case, if anyone's gone through score verification and gotten any good of it, it hasn't come to my notice.

Point the second: People who write well are nearly always disappointed in their results on CBEST Essay. My guess is people who write well get carried away with the topic and forget that the point of the task is to show that one can write not well but well enough, by which I mean successfully juggling the fundamental elements of persuasive or narrative prose all at the same time. (Hemingway would be toast. So would Faulkner, though for different reasons.)

If your writing and speech show evidence of articulateness and lucidity, no one's going to be disturbed by your essay score, especially in light of an outstanding reading-comp score.

Excellent -- thanks so much, that's just what I was looking for. In case you're wondering, they do offer essay score verification for $50, but I agree with TeacherGroupie that it's likely redundant since each essay is already double-graded. Thanks!

    Topic
Having internet has advantages or disadvantage

The internet has been a subject of controversy, especially in the last decade. However, it has also been a positive force of change for many people around the world. The effects on the global community are threefold regarding the internet. The aspect of Education, Culture, and Economics within the current technological environment.

In present times, teachers have more access to information due to the internet than they did historically. The resources that the internet provides makes it easier for educational professionals to tailor their curriculum to better meet the specific needs of their students. In addition, students pursuing higher educational goals are more able to research information on a global spectrum. Finally, online classrooms are an aspect of virtual learning which has indelibly transformed the educational landscape.

The internet has connected the international communities in a way which was impossible in the past. Since, there are many differing cultures one is hard pressed to know how different cultures and beliefs interact in this modern technological era. As a result of the instantaneous spread of information one can learn from various cultures and their rituals, for example, in the art of food preparation one can cook an Indian dish and Skype a friend in the UK while she is making lamb chops. Additionally, the cultural sphere overlaps with the financial sphere.

Lastly, the Economical benefits of accessing the web are enormous. I personally remember going to the bank and standing in a long line to deposit a check. Also, if the need arises to transfer funds to a third party I had to make a bank draft and send it by post. Now, however, people can send and receive payments through the internet in the mere click of a button. Therefore, when a disaster occurs in any country it is incumbent upon the humanitarian relief organizations which utilize the internet and also receive financial donations from all over the world. Therefore, those affected can receive aid in a more efficient manner than in the past.

Thus, using the internet has many advantages in various arenas as described above such as Education, Culture, and Economics. Moreover, in the technological age in which we live there are consequences to the misuse of the web; as with anything else if the internet is used responsibly, great change can be realized. The internet has been a milestone for growth in many countries and there is still yet untapped potential.
