I am using a 7th grade spelling workbook for some additional LangArts stuff. Any ideas for ways to assign HW or projects that help them practice the spelling of the words for that unit? 5times each and sentences seems kinda elementry??;)

What about challenging them to write a story or poem using the words... make a crossword puzzle or wordsearch using them...

I use Scott Foresman word lists for my 7th grade and then the homework person draws one of the following assignments for the week.

*Write your spelling words in a line of run-on letters. Have a partner find and circle the words.
*Write in read crayon first, then overtop in blue, then overtop in green
    *Alphabetize
    * Draw a map of a town. make a street for each one of your spelling words
*Write down the way you are going to remember each spelling word.
*Cut and paste letters from magazines/newspapers to form spelling words
*Draw a picture to illustrate each word. Write the word underneath the picture.
*List the words in pyramid form from easiest to hardest. Line one (easiest) is one word, the next line, two words, next line three, etc.
*Write each spelling word in a meaningful sentence
*With a partner, write your words scrambled up, have partner unscramble them
*Write down the two "guide-words" that each spelling word is between in the dictionary
*Spelling "concentration" match words upside down
    *Create a word search puzzle
*Back to Back Spelling - trace each other's back and guess the word
    *Categorize the words by syllables
*Create a crossword puzzle using at least 15 words
*List the words from shortest to longest by number of letters

*Spelling BINGO - have students make BINGO sheets (5x5 with free "spell" space in the middle). Teacher note: Call on a student to stand up and spell a word. If the students spells the word correctly, everyone who has the word can cover it up
*Write each word and circle the vowels or consonants
    * Create a secret code by assigning a number to each letter of the alphabet. Write 10 of your spelling words in code. Challenge a classmate to use code to decode each word.
*Using crayon, write each word - consonants in blue, vowels in red
    *Make a spelling rainbow
*Draw a picture and "hide" the words in the picture
*Write the words and a synonym for each word
*Write the words and an antonym for each word
*Make a cartoon using the words
*Identify the part of speech of each word and use it in a sentence
*Write a story using 15 of your words.
*Write a poem using 10 of your words.
    *Divide each word into syllables
*Use 15 of your words - add a suffix or prefix to make a different word.

you could have them find the words in real world media. Then they could cut out the article and highlight the word.
