Hello! I am a brad, new teacher and have been assigned to teach 6th grade ELA/Reading. I feel very lost and I'm having a hard time coming up with fun ideas for the first week of school that will allow everyone to start the new year off on the right foot.

Also, I am looking for different ideas on behavior management for 6th grade. I have completed some research but haven't had any luck finding reinforcements and such for their age.

Any and all ideas are greatly appreciated! Thank you!

You and I are in the same boat! I, too, am a new ELA/Reading teacher. I hope this is my last move before retiring! I have taught 5th grade for many years, so I do not anticipate this to be a difficult move.
Are you in a middle school or elementary? I will only have each class for 45 minutes, so for the first week, I am going to be doing a lot of procedural lessons. For example, I will do my top 10 ways to succeed in Mrs. Kniiter's 6th grade Reading/English class, help with opening lock combinations, our school wide discipline policy (we use CHAMPS) and so on. I will also administer any necessary pre assessments and my reading survey. ( I use Donalyn Miller's Book Whisperer one). In English I will do much of the same. I will do First Day Jitters (very cute story with a twist-it is the teacher's first day) and have the kids write about their jitters of starting middle school. This will serve as my survey of their writing skills.
I do believe the best way to succeed in the discipline area is to be fair, firm and consistent. At this age, they will try to take advantage of you-be strong!
