I have twin boys that are 4.5 years old in my classroom. I teach a half-day program, so they are with me 3 hours/day. They both wear pull-ups, do not indicate the need to use the restroom, and have bowel movements 2-3x while they are at school. They do not indicate that they need to be changed.

I've never had typical students this age not toilet trained (or at least in process). I've talked to their parents multiple times. She has no concerns and says that they'll let her know when they are ready.

    Thoughts?

Is this a private daycare/preschool or a public school?

Do the boys have any special needs?

Public school. They qualified for my spec ed. preschool classroom for articulation.

I'm surprised that your public school program allows children who aren't toilet trained at that age.
Have they been assessed for any other special needs? It may be time to evaluate, especially since they aren't indicating that they recognize toileting urges.

Not surprised - they are SPED for whatever reason, and no concern at home. Probably the speech problem was enough to get them in.

Wow.. that's crazy. I thought 3-year-olds coming into my room not potty trained was crazy. 4.5-year-olds is crazier

They must have more than just a articulation problem. I can see a kindergarten program having issues with a child not being potty trained unless there is something SPE about them other than articulation.

When were they evaluated? How are they academically?

Our ECSE preschoolers would need to qualify for Speech and Language (not articulation only) for services. We usually do a comprehensive evaluation also (not Speech only) which would provide more information about their skills. If they are not toilet trained this would be addressed in the IEP under Self Help Skills. Are there other developmental delays?

Ours would need more than that... Developmental delay, autism, etc. Not just SLI.

There were very few speech only preschoolers and they received services from other sources (Not the DOE Preschool). Sorry I wasn't more specific.
